Many people believe that during a disaster people in the communities will lose their minds and start acting accordingly. Not only during a disaster but also after a disaster. Henry W. Fisher, described the misconceptions as “individuals are commonly perceived as likely to loot property, price gouge one another, and generally behave in other selfish ways.” Henry W. Fisher says that these actions can go from one individual to another in a very contagious way, it is a misconception of course. The media and disaster management personnel have a lot of say in how people react during a disaster, according to Fisher. If the media or emergency personnel acts or reacts in a panic way, it can generally cause the public to do so as well. Panic is described as being part of fear. people will fear what is happening or the outcome of it which causes them to panic. According to Drabek, 1968, people will not try to flee during a disaster. If there is no escape route, people normally will wait until an avenue of escape is present. Many people will avoid evacuation just because they fear their property will get stolen. Looting does not occur as often as people think it does. According to Fisher, pass systems are developed to avoid this type of thing and as I mentioned, people will avoid evacuating because of this purpose. In addition, during the Texas Hurricane Gilbert, local news were reporting that individuals were price gouging. According to researchers, nobody was arrested or charged for these actions. Many times media report things that they think might happen but it does not occur. The media and emergency personnel spreading false information is what can cause civilians to panic or be afraid of what is going on or what the cause of the disaster might be. It is very important for emergency management to understand what is really going on before they spread false information and cause people to take the wrong decisions or actions toward a disaster. this can cause lives and property damage as well. Psalm 91:2 says, “I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” We must put everything in God’s hands and he will guide us, even during disasters.
