RISE Feedback:

REFLECT: I concur with “Action plans should reflect the type of services that are needed and have an idea of the expected outcome of the services” because it is in line with Hatch and Hartline’s intentional school counseling guidelines in regards to determining students needs.

INQUIRE: Can you further explain what “closing-the-gap action plans” are? 

SUGGEST: I encourage you to revisit Hatch and Hartline’s MTMDSS tier interventions in order to add a citation that would illustrate your example on bullying prevention efforts. 

ELEVATE: What if you re-purposed “For example, after a needs assessment, the school is having problems with bullying” as “Following Trish Hatch’s MTMDSS tier based interventions, if the school is having problems with bullying, after a needs assessment, we could… citation…”  for a more weighted argument?

Response 2- Michelle

There are many levels of measurement in when it comes to educational research. The four types described in chapter 6 include nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio. These scales help us measure and organize data for different reasons. The nominal scale is used to basically classify data in groups or in categories. The ordinal scale is used more as a natural measure such as ranking or rating although the degree of different in rank or rating is now known. So, the difference between like a first and second might be very minute. The interval scale is used in comparisons and calculations and measure equal intervals between values. You’re basically comparing one score to another. The ratio scale is used for comparisons, interpretations, and computations such as percentages, averages, and ratios. This scale is not likely used very much in educational research but more in science, finance, and maybe engineering. 
      The range is the data that is kind of spread out between 2 values that include the lowest and highest. To get the average range, we subtract the lowest from the highest in a certain time period. It’s important to note that scaling the numbers over a duration is important to research and is what gives an average. 

     All of these levels of measurement are great tools in research to be able to take a look at data so we can better support our students when it comes to evidence-base practices. We can also use the information to see which programs are effective and working for our students. I feel like I was doing my own levels of measurement with students today and making a data report. I needed to know why my first period students were either absent or late… along the lines of the ordinal scale with reasons why. With the top reason being that whoever is bringing them cannot get them here on time. Next was missing the school bus, the bus not being available in their area, or public transportation would make them have to be at the bus at 6 am when school starts at 8:30. Lastly, some students simply wake up late or take a long time to get ready so don’t make it on time. Regardless, I need to find solutions. I am at a continuation high school, so I am here willing to collect data and use it for prevention/intervention strategies.
