RISE Feedback:

REFLECT: I concur with “Action plans should reflect the type of services that are needed and have an idea of the expected outcome of the services” because it is in line with Hatch and Hartline’s intentional school counseling guidelines in regards to determining students needs.

INQUIRE: Can you further explain what “closing-the-gap action plans” are? 

SUGGEST: I encourage you to revisit Hatch and Hartline’s MTMDSS tier interventions in order to add a citation that would illustrate your example on bullying prevention efforts. 

ELEVATE: What if you re-purposed “For example, after a needs assessment, the school is having problems with bullying” as “Following Trish Hatch’s MTMDSS tier based interventions, if the school is having problems with bullying, after a needs assessment, we could… citation…”  for a more weighted argument?

Describe an area(s) that you would like to explore further and/or develop your skills further.

As I begin new placement for my internship at the high school level, I look forward to exploring the academic side of counseling as well as helping out with college and career planning. At my previous site (elementary level) I was able to gain a lot of experience in the social/emotional development and laying the foundation of developing skills and career/college options but hardly ever focused on academics, so I can’t wait to explore this domain of counseling more thoroughly. High school counselors are more oriented toward academic and career plans, preparing students for life after graduation. They are also more attuned to the social and emotional climates facing students, complete with internal and external pressures such as drug abuse, bullying, mental health crises, etc. All my memories of school counseling as a profession are at the high school level so it will be interesting to see how it relates to my experience to the current high school counseling program.

Classmate response 2- Madison

Describe your experiences with maintaining professional and/or ethical responsibilities in school counseling.

This week at my junior high we had a student who shared that she was planning to commit suicide to one of her best friends. Her best friend requested to speak to the counselor and shared his concerns about her plan that same afternoon after she told him. We were able to pull the student immediately after. Once the student arrived in our office, my counselor did a great job at asking check-in questions at first to hear how things were going and to see if she was going to willingly share the information. The student disclosed that she was not planning to commit suicide, did not have a plan in place or what she would use, but shared current feelings of stress related to classes, friendships, and an ex-boyfriend. My counselor let the student know that based on the information that she shared with her friend, an assessment needed to be done and that her parents would have to be notified too. I observed as my counselor conducted an SI screener which turned out to be low-risk. Even though the screener determined her to be low-risk, we have a professional and ethical responsibility as counselors to inform her parents. 

We called mom to let her know and to come sign the paperwork. We wanted to make sure that mom picked her daughter up rather than ride the bus. That was an important first step because we always want to ensure student safety which is also another component of our professional and ethical responsibilities. We would never want to let a student ride the bus, walk home/ride a bike after school, if they had an SI or HI screener conducted that day. We also discussed current life at home after school (ex. if student is normally at home alone, making arrangements to have an adult present for a while) to ensure her safety. During the meeting with mom, my counselor went over the paperwork then gave the student the opportunity to talk to mom. Mom was very supportive and explained to her daughter that she wants her to have the support she needs while navigating through the challenges of junior high. Moving forward, I will be checking in with this student regularly.
