COMPLETE DISCUSSION FORUM POST 1 BEFORE POST 2 AND POST 3. See Assignment Summary for due dates. There is a 10 point penalty for submitting Post 1 after the due date.
Post 1: Find the following values working each one by hand. Show each step! Use the methods given in the textbook.

  1. Collect a set of 10 real, quantitative data values. Do this by asking people or observing items. For example, find the heights of 10 adults, find the annual income of 10 adults, measure the lengths of 10 different cars, record the number of children in 10 households, etc. The possibilities are endless! Make sure to completely describe and list the data so your classmates will understand your results and can check your results.
  2. Calculate the mean. Show and explain your work.
  3. Calculate the median. Show and explain your work.
  4. Calculate the mode. Show and explain your work.
  5. Calculate the range. Show and explain your work.
  6. Calculate the variance. Show and explain your work.
  7. Calculate the standard deviation. Show and explain your work.

Post 2: Check values using the TI calculator.

  1. Pick a classmate who has not been responded to yet. Check their calculations in post 1 using the TI calculator. Explain how you put the data into your calculator and how to get the answers (TI-83/84, it’s different for TI-Nspire). What buttons do you need to use? What do you need to put into the TI calculator? If any of the answers are not correct, tactfully identify the error and show the work correctly. Check all calculations carefully because if you miss a mistake it will affect your grade.
  2. Calculate Q1, Q2, and Q3. Show or explain your work.
  3. Construct the box-and-whisker plot. There are many ways to accomplish this. You can use Word and its drawing tools. You can even draw this on paper, take a picture, and post the image. I consider the easiest way to be using the website: Imathas Boxplot Grapher (opens new window). It will help you create the box-and-whisker plot, which you can download as an image and post in your thread.

Post 3

  1. Pick a classmate who has not been responded to yet.  Check their calculations for Post 1 and Post 2. If any of the answers are not correct, tactfully identify the error and show the work correctly. Check all calculations carefully because if you miss a mistake it will affect your grade.
  2. Consider your classmate’s Post 1 and Post 2 answers. Which calculation, the mean, median, or mode, do you feel is the best representation of their data? Or, perhaps you feel each calculation represents the data well?? Explain your point of view using statistics to back it up.
  3. Write a sentence that interprets the meaning of the standard deviation your classmate calculated.
  4. Write a sentence that interprets the meaning of Q1, Q2, and Q3
