A practice management system is a simpler, smaller-scale type of information system compared to the more complex systems that are utilized in large-scale healthcare systems (Nelson & Staggers 2018). These types of systems are important to physician practices because they integrate patient demographics, the patient’s medical record, documentation of interventions and treatments provided, and billing information all in one convenient location. These practice management systems used in physician offices are much less comprehensive than information systems, so they are easier to navigate and provide the patient’s information in a more condensed form. The system also integrates the patient’s insurance information so that billing practices, such as submitting claims, can be done seamlessly through the same program (Nelson & Staggers 2018).
There are different point of care tools that physicians can utilize when operating within these practice management systems. One beneficial tool is a dictation feature that allows the physician to dictate their patient notes and have them populate in the patient’s chart in real time. This decreases the risk of errors that can be made when using a third-party transcription service to decipher a physician’s notes and transcribe them into the patient’s chart (Nelson & Staggers 2018). It also improves the time that it takes the physician to document a patient’s visit, which can expedite the billing process and the scheduling of future visits.
