OBJECTIVE
- Identify a trend in the entertainment industry.
- Analyze the impact of the trend on the consumer and industry.
- Discuss the growth of a specific trend.
What is the difference between a fad and a trend?
Fad (n.) an intense and widely shared enthusiasm for something, especially one that is short-lived and without basis in the object’s qualities, a craze.
A fad is typically based on someone’s opinion and it is very quick spreading and short-lived. An example of a fad would be fidget spinners. They were here, everyone had to have one and now they are gone. Can you think of a popular fad?
Trend (n.) the general movement over time of a statistically detectable change.
A trend is driven by a functional need and tends to move slower. They are supported by facts and can be measured. An example of a trend would be jeans. Jeans were created as workwear for laborers on farms and in mines during the late 19th century. Workers were in need of an extremely durable pair of pants that were reinforced by rivets. Later popularized by Marlon Brando and James Dean when worn on-screen in their films. Jeans began to make their way into mainstream culture and since then jeans have seen many styles throughout the years. Some styles even recycling after years of lying dormant. Jeans are a trend because they were born out of a functional need that gained popularity slowly over time.
