The philosophical theory of virtue ethics provides a compelling perspective on ethics that places an emphasis on the development of virtue and good character as the cornerstone of ethical decision-making. Even though it might not be the only ethical theory to take into account, it has the potential to be the most advantageous moral code for everyone to adhere to.

Bauer .(2020) argues that  in virtue ethics, the emphasis is on “being” rather than “doing,” emphasizing the development of moral character and virtue in people. This strategy promotes the growth of virtues like honesty, compassion, courage, and wisdom that direct people’s actions in a morally upright manner. Virtue ethics permits a more adaptable and situation-sensitive approach to ethical dilemmas in contrast to utilitarianism, which emphasizes outcomes, and Kantianism, which emphasizes strict moral rules.

The adaptability of virtue ethics to various cultural and situational contexts is one of its advantages. It acknowledges that moral decision-making is not always cut and dried and that people may encounter difficult moral conundrums for which a one-size-fits-all solution is insufficient. Instead, virtue ethics urges people to take into account their character and the formation of virtue habits when making decisions.

Walker & Lovat. (2018) notes that virtue ethics offers a framework that can help people in our modern society, where moral relativism and cultural diversity are pervasive, bridge the gap between various value systems. It fosters a sense of commonality and ethical understanding among various groups by promoting an emphasis on universal human virtues that cut across cultural boundaries.
